R.A.F. speakers

Reclaimed PA system? These took me all of Sunday afternoon.

A prototype for possibly branching out into sound reinforcement systems.

Made from a surprisingly clean pallet (or pallet edging boards – I’m not entirely sure what they were) and some scrap plywood from some solid old fitted shelves that had been sitting in the garage for years.

Using maths I calculated the optimum port and internal volumes for maximum efficiency and came up with this pair of speakers using Fane and Eminence PA drivers.

UPDATE: Since the photos were taken I added proper speakon connectors and a little more bracing to take the rated wattage, as well as replacing the wood screws with through bolts to make things a bit more secure, I ran them with a 500w PA amp to see how they handled power, they hit painful levels before even stressing the amplifier . . . really want to make a matching sub eventually . . . . They still needs some grills however.

In this case R.A.F. does not stand for the Royal Air Force. . .

About Me

Since 2008 I’ve been working on various handmade speaker designs, from monstrous surround sound setups, to mixing monitors, to battery powered portables and as many in between as I could think of.

With a Masters Degree in Product Design Engineering from the Glasgow School of Art and The University of Glasgow, I had a good foundation in design and engineering. Along the way I built up my woodworking skills, moving back home to Dorset and learning traditional woodworking skills at The Boat Building Academy in Lyme Regis.

My aim is to bring the pasts high quality hand joinery to present day items. The art is not lost quite yet and I believe there is still a place for hand made objects made to be used and made to last. Now more than ever with sustainability becoming more important.
